My book review of 'When Haru Was Here' by Dustin Thao
After the death of his best friend, Eric Ly creates imaginary situations in his head to deal with his grief. So much so that he no longer knows what is real, and what's not.
Eric is thrilled that a boy he met last summer – Haru Tanaka – has come into the coffee shop and wants to spend time with him. Having a friend, someone to connect with, is really important at this time. But nobody else can see Haru.
Eric starts to lose control of the thing that is holding him together, and confronting reality may mean he loses Haru forever.
This is a very special, delicate and rather beautiful, magical story which seeks to explore loneliness, friendships, and what it means to let go.
It's written by a Vietnamese-American writer and it has the quirkiness I associate with Japanese fiction. It's a book for teenagers in the YA genre, and features a gay relationship.
