My book review of 'Penance' by Eliza Clark

Penance
by Eliza Clark

First of all, let me draw attention to the cover - it has scribbled pen over one of the figures, as you can see. This is indented and very realistic but is in fact a publisher's device. Not sure I like it! But it certainly made the book stand out and I'm sure the wholesaler has had a number of requests by bookshops keen to return 'damaged' copies.

This is the story of the murder of a sixteen-year-old girl in the town of Crow-on-Sea. It happened nearly a decade earlier but the events of that terrible night are still being felt by that community and beyond. A journalist, Alec Z. Carelli, is putting together the 'definitive' account of the murder and what led up to it.

We are privy to hours of interviews with witnesses and family members, painstaking historical research and correspondence with the killers themselves. But how much of this can we believe?

This is an intriguing book. I felt swept up and along by the author's writing which seemed fresh, lively and original. Being a fan of non-fiction generally, the style of the book appealed to me though I don't like reading text messages (fortunately there weren't many). I'm definitely looking out for more by this author.
