My book review of 'Blue Heart' by Nicola Davies
This is a beautiful, informative and very moving book produced by the award-winning writer-illustrator Nicola Davies. In picture book format, it is nevertheless sophisticated in its content.
Nicola Davies is the author of more than 80 books including picture books, non-fiction, fiction and poetry for children and adults. She has written widely on many subjects including environmental science, children’s rights, disability, grief and refugees.
Here she presents a series of poems giving an insight into the various species of whale living across the world. She describes how she feels encountering them for the first time, and there are facts about them, too, as well as the gorgeous, stunning illustrations.
She urges us to engage with the creatures as she describes them, and as a result to save them from exploitation and ultimately extinction. It's the most engaging, inspiring but also poignant book.
In the picture book format and with the stunning illustrations, it will engage younger children from aged four upwards, but the depth of the writing will touch the hearts of anyone of any age turning the pages of this remarkable book.
