My book review of 'Flora and Ulysses' by Kate di Camillo and illustrated by KG Campbell
I've been meaning to read this author for some time but had this title recommended and thought this title, with its humour and superhero squirrel, was just the place to start. And I loved it!
Flora Belle Buckman has read every issue of the comic book 'Terrible Things Can Happen to You!' so when a squirrel gets sucked up the vacuum cleaner she is ready for action.
She hadn't anticipated what would happen to the squirrel as a result of her rescue, though. Ulysses (the squirrel) has become equipped with superhero powers of strength, flight and misspelt poetry.
Through their friendship and adventures, and the cast of characters they meet, Flora is also changed for the better.
This is a fun, imaginative story aimed at readers aged 9+. And it boasts fantastic black and white illustrations, some presented as comic-book sequences. There's so much to enjoy here. I loved it and hope to read much more from this author very soon!
