My book review of 'A Walk from the Wild Edge' by Jake Tyler
Jake Tyler was working in a pub in Brighton. There were late nights, plenty of drink and drugs, and he was burnt out. Realising he was having suicidal thoughts, he rang his mum who told him to leave his job and go to live with her on her houseboat.
In her company, and after cooking some meals and walking her dog, he felt stronger and decided to set himself a challenge.
Getting outside, appreciating nature and walking had made him feel better, so he thought how he might feel if he walked a bit further. He set himself a goal to walk all round Britain, and he achieved it.
There were a few setbacks along the way, but it was a hugely formative and encouraging experience, for him and the reader.
Jake came to know himself better, and was also inspired and uplifted by the people he met. Whereas he had always thought that you don't get something for nothing, and it's wise to be wary and suspicious of strangers, time and again on his journey he found that people were inordinately kind and generous, and they were interested in him with no strings attached.
It's a great read, a real page turner, and Jake's experiences of people and places lift the spirit!
