My book review of 'Silence is not an option' by Stuart Lawrence
Stuart Lawrence is the younger brother of Stephen Lawrence who, on 22 April 1993, at the age of 18, was murdered in an unprovoked racist attack.
Stuart is an educator and motivational speaker, seeking to help transform the life chances of young people. This is his first book and was published a couple of years ago but I only recently discovered it. Subtitled 'Find your voice and be your best self' it is a guide for young people (aged 10+ is suggested).
It's easy to read with large type and a creative page design, but is also perfect for referring back to time and again.
Each section begins with Stuart Lawrence's own recollection or observation about Stephen's life - how he was popular and studious, had ambitions to be an architect, and was the perfect big brother.
Stuart shares, too, what he has learnt about life having experienced this terrible tragedy as a family. It's delicately done but is very powerful.
The advice in the book includes tips on managing and valuing money, discipline, self-reflection, setting goals and coping with disappointments ('it's not failure, it's unfinished business' and 'in every failure there's a lesson to be learned: First Attempt At Learning').
Life is not always about the circumstances we face but what we make of those circumstances, he says, and he talks about being grateful, appreciating the small things and being kind.
'Believe in yourself and always give more to the world than you take from it.'
We can all learn something from this book, whatever age. It's a moving and inspiring read. I hope you'll take a look.
