My book review of 'Funny Story' by Emily Henry
With David Nicholls' 'You Are Here' giving renewed credibility to the love story, and having noted the current trend in the popularity of romantic fiction, I've been looking out for new authors to try. Emily Henry is considered one of the hot young writers in this genre, so I had high hopes. And it was indeed an engrossing, amusing, entertaining read, where you felt sure there was going to be a feel good factor with a happy ever after.
Daphne and Peter are a couple. They're used to people asking how they met and Peter tells a good story, which Daphne enjoys hearing. Until this becomes a preamble to Peter's new story - his relationship with his longstanding best friend, Petra, now the love of his life.
Daphne is suddenly without a partner and a home so turns to Miles, Petra's ex, for practical help and consolation. They end up as housemates and, to spite Petra and Peter, contrive a relationship of their own.
Of course their conceit comes to pass as reality - Miles and Daphne find they do rather like each other after all, and are better off without their former partners. But it takes some misunderstandings, miscommunications and awkward situations before all can be out in the open. And can they make it work?
I may have given too much away but isn't that the thing with romantic novels - you know who's going to end up with who and it's only a matter of time and a couple of hundred pages before the happy ever after?
It's an entertaining diversion of a read, with characters you enjoy getting to know and incidents to make you smile. I liked it!
