My book review of 'Free Love' by Tessa Hadley
The cover and premise of this novel didn't appeal - not 'my sort of thing'. But I've been desperate to read this author for such a time that I thought I'd pick it up. And my! Absolutely wonderful! The sensitive, gentle, delicate writing and minutely observed description reminded me of Barbara Pym, with a world reminiscent of suburban life in the 50s rather than the sexual and intellectual liberation promised in the blurb, and as such I loved it!
It's 1967 and the Fischer family are comfortable and conventional, until a young man comes to dinner.
When Phyllis steals a kiss from Nick in the garden, it unleashes in her a desire to flee her husband and children for a life of Bohemian London.
The consequences of her actions are felt by every member of her family and beyond, and the layers of hurt and disruption are lifted slowly but comprehensively.
It's a wonderful read. All the characters are complex and fascinating and I was sorry to leave them. Brilliant!
