My book review of 'Quiet' by Susan Cain

Quiet

This is a book I've turned to over and again, and regularly recommend.

It is incredibly readable, and fascinating, exploring the world as it is seen and experienced by those who might consider themselves introverts, while also having plenty to say to those who would label themselves as extroverts.

It's a particularly relevant book to all of us today.

Are you somebody who is happy in their own company and is relishing the time for solitude and self-care?

Or are you distressed that you are unable to be alongside others, needing to find another stimulus to replace what you would normally gain from socialising and community?

Of course we all have character traits from both ends of this spectrum, and there is no negative or positive here. It is an encouraging, enlightening and stimulating book for all of us, I think.

The greatest message is one I've received elsewhere too and need to keep reminding myself - we mustn't compare ourselves with others. We shouldn't worry about how other people are responding. We mustn't feel the pressure of performing, of achieving, in this situation. Whether we are working from home, volunteering or isolating, learning a new language or doing nothing at all, gardening or streaming films. For each of us, we should know that our individual personal response is real and we need to do what we need to do to get through.
