Presenting Kate Sawyer and This Family - Event Report

It was a warm and bright evening for our event at Woodbridge Library, perfect for our introduction to 'This Family', the new novel from local writer, Kate Sawyer.

The story takes place during one day - and 40 years. Extended family and friends have gathered for a summer wedding in Suffolk. Through a chorus of characters, we learn about the events which have led them to this day of celebration for Mary. Will this be an opportunity to heal broken relationships or are some things impossible to forgive, even for family? Memories from the past four decades punctuate the day’s events and layers of life are peeled away, reminding us all of what shapes us into the people we are today.

Having enjoyed great success with her debut, Costa-shortlisted ‘The Stranding’, Kate Sawyer has written another stunning novel, quite different in style and theme but no less accomplished and compelling and once again she is working hard to make her novel stand out from the crowd of newly published titles.

Resplendent in pink polka dot, Kate held the room spellbound with her warm and generous personality. She shared the challenges and joys of being published, her working schedule and her efforts reaching potential readers with her book. She explained how and why she has built relationships with other authors (new and established), booksellers, book groups and bloggers and how she regularly posts on social media to make her name and her novels known. She also runs a podcast where she talks to other writers about their work.

Kate is full of energy and enthusiasm and is determined and inspiring. Born in Bury St Edmunds, the eldest of four siblings, she worked as an actor before deciding to fulfil her lifelong ambition of becoming a writer, and a mother.
