My book review of 'Fallout' by Lesley Parr
Set in Wales, this is a story about a boy who has a bad start in life and tries to overcome the odds, and the preconceptions and prejudices of the community around him at school and at home.
It's aimed at readers aged 9-12 and written by Lesley Parr - I very much enjoyed another of her books, called 'Where the River Takes Us' which I also recommend.
Marcus has one brother in a youth offender centre and the other is working with their dad on plans for their next theft. Everyone assumes Marcus will follow in their footsteps.
When an accident lands a man in hospital, Marcus gets the blame. Only new girl Emma questions the events and is prepared to help Marcus clear his name and help him become the person he wants to be.
Great story, well written with good characterisation and a powerful message about small town expectations, questioning your loyalties, and making your way in the world.
