For Rosemary and Kate, life revolves around Brixton Lido, so when it is threatened with closure and redevelopment as a new housing complex, they feel compelled to act.

Rosemary is in her late 80s and has swum in this pool most days in her adult life. Now widowed, it is the place where she feels closest to her late husband.

Kate is a young reporter who has moved away from friends and family for this new job but she is struggling to find her way, and suffers from panic attacks.

When the two meet at the lido, they build a strong friendship and come to recognise and appreciate the love and support of the local community.

This is a light, enjoyable read which delights in highlighting the village within the city and how 'the little people' can sometimes make a difference in countering the might of big business.

While I was surprised that a number of the storylines didn't develop as I anticipated as we looked back on the lives of Kate and Rosemary, I found this a charming, escapist and uplifting book, perfect for the summer!
