There's always so much to take in with a novel by Richard Powers. I've enjoyed 'Bewilderment' and 'The Overstory' in the past, so knew something of what to expect with this. His books are long and expansive and always have a strong message.

'Playground' is set in the world’s largest ocean and explores this, the last wild place we have yet to colonise. Powers presents profound themes of technology and the environment, and our shared humanity, with a sense of awe and wonder for the marine life in all its complexity. It's amazing! 

There are four main characters who are brought together on the island of Makatea in French Polynesia where they are confronted with a plan to send floating, autonomous cities out into the open sea. How will they all respond? What will be the outcome? What will be the consequences? 

There's so much in this book. For me there is an argument for more editing, and there was a definite ebb and flow with the sections I enjoyed most against the others where I had to pay more attention. But when I give myself up to his writing, I find it fascinating and quite breathtaking!
