My review:

A little sausage dog is being taken for a walk by his owner in the city. It's hot and crowded and noisy, and eventually he decides he's had enough and sits down in the middle of a pedestrian crossing and refuses to go any further.

His owner tries to urge him along but soon gives in and calls a taxi to the station. They get on a train and make their way to the beach where 'a pup can run'. And he can also play with pebbles, dig in the sand, splash in the ocean before eventually it's time to go home.

This is such a beautiful, wonderful book! There's the barest of text but it reads like a poem, with lots of illiteration. The illustrations are glorious and the heat of the city, the freedom of the beach, and the happiness of being back home are all explicit and delightful.

This book is aimed at readers aged three upwards, but it has a much wider appeal, I think!
