The Swing
This is a very special book.
It's such a simple idea and I found it moving and contemplative! Beautiful images and sparse text cause you to pause and wonder with each page.
There's a swing on a hill overlooking the sea. It's been there since anyone can remember and generations have played here, have met and talked here, have laughed and cried.
The swing has always seemed the same, a constant in lives through the years.
But with page after page depicting the scene in wonderfully warm, soft, fluid, translucent illustrations, we see just how much it does change. The weather, the seasons: lives move on.
It's a message about friendship and community, about loss and change, and about memories.
Though the characters who meet here are merely shapes and silhouettes and the text is often no more than a few words on the page, it is an incredibly powerful and poignant story. It's aimed at young readers but will cause all ages to stop and smile in acknowledgement of the truths it's presenting. Quite lovely!
