What about men?

My review:

Being known for writing extensively about the issues facing girls and women today, Caitlin Moran continued to be puzzled by the question she was always asked by audiences: 'what about men?' Surely men had their own forum to debate the issues facing them, why did she need to address them?

But then, of course, she found that there isn't a special section in a bookshop dedicated to men's issues, there is no minister for men in government and the male equivalent of mums.net struggles to grow its membership.

So Caitlin Moran wrote this book. The chapters are dedicated to the various issues she has identified as needing some attention - how men don't like to go to the doctor, for example, how men don't chat to their friends in the same way as women, their competitiveness, their emotions.

Being mindful of a male and female readership, the book is packed with useful information and lots of humour.

The last chapter I actually found quite moving. Moran describes all the things men do well, all the things they contribute, all that we should appreciate - then at the end of the list she realises that she's really just described what we love about dogs!

But she concludes by saying that just as with her first book 'How to be a Woman', her beliefs about gender are no different: 'I am neither pro-woman, nor anti-men...what I really want to be is...a productive, honest, courteously treated human'. Something we all want, and hope to aim for?
