The Murder Game
I do like a good crime novel for some relaxing reading. The knowledge that there will be resolution and restoration is reassuring and calming, but only if the crime isn't violent or gritty. And this novel felt in the spirit of the Golden Age of crime that we associate with Agatha Christie and Dorothy L Sayers etc. A lovely cover and a locked room scenario taking place in a country house hotel. Perfect!
The great and the good of the seaside town of Hamlet Wick in the West Country have gathered together at the local hotel for a New Year murder mystery party. Actors have been invited to take on the key roles following a script devised by one of the hotel employees. But a surprise guest arrives at the last minute and changes the tone of the proceedings. Local developer Damien White hasn't many friends in the area and, as the evening unfolds, we learn of secrets and grievances which have built up over the years and tragedies too. It means anyone could have committed the murder. A great read!
