I don't usually read graphic novels, never mind books with no words, but a friend showed me this title, shortlisted for this year's Kate Greenaway Medal, and aimed at 3-7-year-olds, and I was mesmerised.

A fairground has closed for the night. There are a few remaining staff tidying up from the day, but the customers have left and all seems quiet and still. In the darkness, though, there is movement among the stall and rides. Wild animals emerge from the trees and a racoon pulls a lever making the rollercoasters and carousels come to life, permitting thrills and spills for a different clientele. 

This is a surprisingly wonderful book for all ages! There's enough to chat about on each page, drawing out the imagination and observations of young children, but for an older reader, like me, there was so much in the sophisticated, sensitive and intelligent illustrations to lure me in to this magical world. Beautiful, compelling and a fascinating and delightful escape.
