I remembered this author from her surprise bestseller 'Thursdays in the Park' of several years ago. I can't remember much about it except that I found it an uplifting read that deserved the attention it received. Although she has written other books, they haven't caught my eye, so I was pleased to have the opportunity to read an advance copy of this new novel, due out later in the summer.

Romy has been happily married to successful and respected QC, Michael, for thirty years and they have two adult sons. When she receives an anonymous letter about her husband, Romy's life is torn apart. While she can't find the truth behind the claim, she flees to their holiday home and believes herself having to start life again. Meeting widower, Finch, Romy soon has hope for the future but then Michael has a stroke and it falls on her to care for him. Her new relationship looks at risk, but more revelations are in store.

Once again I found myself hooked by the author's easy writing style, sense of place and characterisation. I believed in Romy and Finch, and felt for their situations and conflicting emotions. Though the day-to-day decisions were vividly described, I thought the bigger issues the characters were facing towards the end of the book were a bit too swiftly and lightly touched upon.

It's a grown-up romance explored through commitments and responsibilities, with the shadow of the past having a habit to haunt you. I enjoyed it!
