The Ninth Child
Blending folklore with historical fiction in the Scottish highlands, this is a beautiful and mystical story which explores religion and the supernatural, women's issues and engineering, with a profound sense of place. Wonderful!
My review:
Inspired by the mysterious death of the 17th century minister Robert Kirke, the story is set in a pivotal era two centuries later when engineering innovation, bringing clean water to Glasgow, flourished, but women did not. It blends folklore with historical fiction and a profound sense of place in a haunting tale.
