I hadn't read any of John Connelly's books before inviting him to speak in Woodbridge, so it was quite a shock to receive this 694 page tome as my introduction to his writing, and in preparation for the event.

But what a discovery!

While I would never say supernatural horror is my 'thing', I found I was completely gripped and unable to put this book down. There's so much going on - there's the story of the Atlas and those who wish to possess it, there are the murders and their evil intent, there's Charlie Parker and his investigation determined to halt the murders, and there are members of the police force trying desperately to keep on top of a terrifying, rapidly escalating situation.

I found the characterisation compelling, and particularly enjoyed the members of the Northumbria Police Force whose humour and warmth punctuated the dark, bleak tale.

I thought it very well written - dense yet the pace was perfectly pitched. I will have to read more!
